Officials at Duke University are investigating whether or not men’s basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski violated a NCAA recruiting rule by offering a scholarship to a recruit during a summer tournament.
Apparently, forward Alex Poythress said that Krzyzewski spoke to him earlier this week while he was in Orlando, Fla., for a tournament with his AAU team, the Georgia Stars, and offered him a scholarship.
NCAA rules prohibit contact with recruits during tournament play.
Naturally, Duke spokesman Jon Jackson issued a statement saying “…proper adherence to NCAA bylaws has always been, and will continue to be, a cornerstone of Duke Athletics. Also, we’re giant douches.” Note: it’s possible that last sentence was made up by yours truly.
For argument’s sake, Poythress is a 6-foot-7 forward and is considered one of the nation’s top high school seniors.
I would love to see Duke get slapped across the face for this, I really would, but I’m sure it’ll blow over because the NCAA can’t have their sweet little Duke embroiled in some sort of recruiting scandal, now can they? It’ll end up being just like the Patriots’ cheating scandal with the NFL. All the evidence goes to the league office and then, miraculously, is destroyed a day later. We wouldn’t want to muss Tom Brady’s hair now, would we?
